Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Expands License Plate Recognition System
Burlington, MA, March 27, 2001 – ALPHATECH, Inc., maker of the leading system for License Plate Recognition (LPR), announced that Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (SHIA) has signed contracts for expansion of its Parking and Revenue control system. SHIA will expand the system in the East Economy lot, where the airport has added a large garage and is adding others. The expanded system, which includes the LPR working in conjunction with the Scheidt & Bachmann revenue control system, provides information to compute incremental fees for parking.
LPR system enhances service and revenues
The expanded PARCS / LPR system is a significant add-on to the Scheidt & Bachmann / ALPHATECH system that SHIA installed in five parking facilities in 1999. The initial system was installed on 61 entry and exit lanes in the three garages and two surface lots. ALPHATECH delivers plate reading accuracy rates that are significantly higher than the specifications required.
The LPR system, working in an integrated fashion with the Revenue Control System, is valuable to SHIA in several ways. LPR provides information for fact-based resolution of lost tickets and fee disputes. The occasional customer who fabricates a story to reduce his fee discovers that the airport has reliable computerized data on his stay. According to SHIA Parking Manager Cindy Perea-Hernandez, LPR helps deters behavior of this kind, once people know it is there.
LPR system fingers suspected car thief
The LPR system also increases facility security. In a rare case, LPR singled out a few vehicles that entered and exited several facilities just before and after several attempted thefts on the same day. Police departments in several cities are eager to interface the LPR system with their database of hot cars.
